Work > Patchwork in Blue
In 1818, the British government decided to send female convicts to Australia. A Quaker woman called Elizabeth Fry witnessed the appalling conditions these women and their children were transported in and challenged the system. One of the results was that each woman was given a bag containing everything they needed to each make a patchwork quilt during the long 17 weeks at sea.
Liz has created a series of 15cm square glass plates inspired by these Quaker patchwork quilts. They are currently showcased at Studio 9 Gallery in Elland.
